Sara Carvalhal, ABC-RI Researcher, is one of the winners of the prestigious Maratona da Saúde award in biomedical research. This is the 3rd Maratona da Saúde award delivered to researchers of our Institute. Pedro Castelo-Branco and Leonor Faleiro have been awarded on the 1th and 2nd Edition, respectively.
At the 7th Edition of this award, FCT and Maratona da saúde in partnership with RTP+ and Jasen, sponsored two projects (Junior and Senior Category) in the thematic: ”Research In Rare Syndromes”.
Sara Carvalhal was distinguished for her work in the area of rare syndromes with microcephaly, a birth defect where a baby’s head is smaller than expected when compared to babies of the same sex and age. ”In this work we aim to understand how cell division contributes to this birth defect. A high number of evidences suggest this process of cell division is involved in the development of microcephaly, yet the fundamental biology underlining this birth defect remains unknown”. She also says ”this is a very important prize to help me to stablish this independent research line at ABC-RI”.
The award was delivered on Friday, October 29, in the program “Health Marathon”, broadcast by RTP1. The 8th Edition is dedicated to Infectious Diseases.
