ABC-RI and ABC CoLAB researcher awarded international prize in the field of neuroscience

David Brito, researcher at ABC CoLAB – Ageing Better and the ABC-RI of the University of Algarve, has been awarded the prestigious IZN/CHS Young Investigator Neuroscience Award 2025, an international prize granted by the Chica and Heinz Schaller Foundation.

This award recognises an outstanding scientific publication in the field of neuroscience, based on the quality, methodological innovation, and conceptual relevance of the work. The distinction was granted for the article “Biphasic Npas4 expression promotes inhibitory plasticity and suppression of fear memory consolidation in mice”, published in the renowned journal Molecular Psychiatry. The study was conducted during David Brito’s PhD in the laboratory of Professor Ana Oliveira at Heidelberg University (Germany) and co-authored with Janina Kupke, who was also recognised as co–first author.

The awarded research demonstrates how the brain can actively suppress the consolidation of traumatic memories through a specific pattern of Npas4 gene expression. This discovery offers important insights into the understanding and potential treatment of psychiatric disorders related to memory, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

The award will be formally presented during the annual IZN Retreat, to be held on 13–14 July 2025 in Kloster Schöntal, Germany.
