Mariano Gago Memorial Lecture with Mariano Barbacid

ABC-RI is pleased to announce its second edition of the ABC-RI named lecture: Mariano Gago Memorial Lecture.

In this edition, we are honoured to have Professor Mariano Barbacid as our distinguished speaker. Professor Barbacid has been awarded with inmuerous prestigious awards, including the Echegaray Medal, one of the most important medals awarded by the Royal Academy of Exact, Physical, and Natural Sciences.

Professor Barbacid was behind the discovery of the first human oncogene, RAS, revolutionizing our understanding of the molecular mechanisms of cancer.

This lecture will have the distinguished presence of Dr. Maria de Belém Roseira, who will pay a brief tribute to the former Minister of Science Mariano Gago, when she herself was also a minister.

Note on this named lecture: Professor Mariano Gago was one of the most influential Ministers for Science in Portugal (between 1995-2002, and 2005-2011). He was originally from Algarve and his work was a major driver to set the foundations for the current scientific culture of Portuguese Research and Portuguese scientists around the world. He was also key for the creation of what is today FCT, the National Research Council. This lecture is held in his memory, to remind us all of the importance to unravel new challenges.
