About the Lab
Thyroid hormones comprise the prohormone thyroxine (T4) and its metabolite triiodothyronine (T3, hereafter thyroid hormone) that acts as the active hormone. T3 is involved in all life-stages in humans. Altered T3 signalling and homeostasis constitute some of the most prevailing endocrine disorders in humans. The research group in focused in understanding the role of T3 in development and ageing. The research strategy uses the model organism zebrafish together with CRISPR/Cas9 loss of function mutants, coupled to omics and live imaging to gain insight into the functional role of T3 in vertebrate development and ageing.
Three research lines are pursuit:
- In deciphering the role of maternal T3 in vertebrate embryogenesis, neurodevelopment and T3-related congenital diseases;
- Understand T3 role in post-natal vertebrate development;
- Role of T3 in ageing.
