About the Lab

The Health, Ageing and Kinetics Lab (HAK-Lab) is a Laboratory focused on the assessment of general health, body composition, cardiac and respiratory function and kinetics and kinematics of human movement. The HAK-Lab was initially funded by the European Regional Development Fund (FEDER) through the INTERREG V-A Cooperation Program, Spain-Portugal, (POCTEP), 2014-2020.

The HAK-Lab promotes clinical and translational research in ageing, namely functional abilities and their decline, frailty, sarcopenia, musculoskeletal diseases, and other chronic diseases associated with age such as Osteoarthritis, Type 2 Diabetes, Hypertension and Cardiovascular. The HAK-Lab team has been additionally focused on developing new rehabilitation non-pharmacological protocols for chronic diseases, programs to promote health literacy, quality of life and functional independence throughout the life course for adults and elderly populations.

We have established partnerships, with the University Hospital Center of Algarve,  in the areas of physical medicine and rehabilitation, neurology, orthopedics, nephrology, cardiology and internal medicine, as well as, with the Regional Health Administration of Algarve, who is responsible for all primary care and public health in the region, and with several other regional organizations and social care providers such as the Portuguese Red Cross of Tavira, the União de Misericórdias Portuguesas and several Municipalities.
